The saltpans of Torre Colimena and the flamingos

17 April 9:00 - 14:30

The saltpans of Torre Colimena and the flamingos

With this itinerary we will discover the regional natural reserve of the Eastern Taranto coast, of which the salt of the monks of Torre Colimena is part. The salt pan, called of Monks, because it was managed by the Benedictine monks of Aversa until 1404, extends close to a stretch of coastal dunes located west of Torre Colimena. It is a depression, closed by dunes towards the sea and by hills on the land side, in which the sea water at first poured by the storm surges, then channeled into two ducts cut into the tufaceous cliff, was regulated in the inflow by special wooden locks, whose housings are still visible. The extraction of salt, carried out for centuries in this saline as a profitable activity, is evidenced by the presence of a deposit built on the rocky north bank of the same with well-squared ashlars of limestone. Leaning against this building there was a tower (now reduced to a ruin) to defend criminals from the theft of the precious white gold. A few meters away, there is a small church, dedicated to the Madonna del Carmelo, also now in a severe state of decay. The salt of the monks of Torre Colimena is particularly interesting from a naturalistic point of view, both botanical and faunal. It was, in fact, included in the S.I.C. of the “Natura 2000 Network” and is one of the naturalistic areas ideal for birdwatching. In fact, we will observe the evolutions and the wedding parades of the pink flamingos who have lived here permanently for several years now. With a little luck in this period we will also be able to observe the black-winged stilt, the avocet, the kingfisher, the shelduck, the little egret, the squacco heron, the gargane and other birds that come to the salt pan in spring to reproduce and therefore visible in our parts only at this time of year. It is recommended to bring binoculars if you have them. It will be necessary to face this excursion in silence for the whole time that we will walk near the salt pan to avoid disturbing the birds. It will also be an opportunity for friends who love nature photography to find beautiful subjects to immortalize.
